It's a long time to sit for these exams and it takes effort to focus so you don't make careless mistakes, especially on any open response questions (not multiple choice). I recommend at least 8 hours rest each night the week leading up to the exam as well as very healthy foods like lots of fresh vegetables and fruits, lean meats. Go very easy on the fats, white carbohydrates, and sugary foods, too. Eliminate them altogether if possible.<br /><br />Let me know <em>5 weeks prior to your Saturday exam date</em> if you need help to prepare for the college board exam you will be taking. This gives us the 4 Saturdays prior to do sessions from 9 AM to noon with a short break in the middle, of course. Saturdays are prime days to get your body ready for an early morning exam instead of allowing it to sleep late. It's good conditioning also for the test to have a 3 hour session as well.<br /><br />Hope to hear from you all soon if you need the extra help and accountability to prepare. The first week of June ends this academic year's available test dates through ETS (Educational Testing Services). The deadline for preparing for these last tests are in mid-April because of Spring and Easter breaks for various private, public and home-schooled children. I like to think that seniors are mature enough to call me and schedule their own contract time on Saturday mornings. After all, next year you'll be completely on your own and considered an adult. It takes 12 contact hours before your exam date to prepare for either of these college board exams. Vocabulary is a must and reading comprehension will also need attention as most students do not know the techniques for getting through these sections. These seem to be the most frequent areas of need for students preparing to take their entrance exams. <br /><br />If you are a junior, I urge you to take this exam either in May or the first date in the Fall semester. If you are struggling to do well in your last semester of High School, I highly recommend you hire a tutor to help you in passing all of your courses. Nothing is more humiliating than having to take summer school and not graduating with your fellow classmates.<br /><br />Firstly, you need to realize your time is limited in pulling up your grades. The shortest High School contract I use is 12 weeks in length. Right now we are about 6 weeks into your last sememster. If you sign up now for assistance, you won't have to double up the last week or so for completing your contract and preparing for your final exam.<br /><br />Don't delay in telling your parents you are struggling. The longer you wait, the further behind and more discouraged you will become. Be sure to take time at the end of summer to get an academic coach and a good study guide (<em>Princeton Review</em> for example) to help you score your best on your first attempt at the SAT (or ACT).</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The SAT has sample questions on their web site, but it is not enough to prepare you for the actual exam. Areas of Math that are covered include algebra, geometry, arithmetic, conversion of units of measure, understanding value insertion into a rational expression in one or two variables, word problems, and reasoning skills.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The essay portion asks for specific examples to support your argument in the given topic. If you can't keep up with current politics, then you need to review some of the key monetary, political and social events over the past half century in our country. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Get into the habit of reading the news--local, national and international. The BBC World News station on TV is one of the best for world news events. They have won several broadcasting awards for their excellence in presenting the news from around the globe. I am sure they have streaming video on their website as well. You are about to become a responsible citizen of this country and the world. Remember that information is power!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The reading comprehension sections may be one long passage, two short comparative passages or one moderately long passage. Questions appear in the order of the reading materials for the single passages. Remember to read a little, answer a few questions, read some more, answer some more items, etc. If you spend the whole allotted time reading, you score <em>no points</em>!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>The grammar and the vocabulary are contextual. For example, you will be given a sentence and you must judge whether the grammar is correct as is or there is a better way to state the sentence. The vocabulary sections have one or two blanks in the sentence(s) and you have multiple choices of words that best fit into the context. </div><div> </div><div></div><div>The vocabulary words are college level words and not ones familiar to you, so get a good guide for SAT vocabulary words.I recommend perusing several books over the summer and making flash cards in 3 segments of the alphabet for each of your summer months, i.e., vocabulary beginning with letters A-J for June memory work, K-R for July memory work, and S-Z for August memory work. The more words you can add to your vocabulary before testing, the better your language score will be.
